Google Books Preview for Magento shops

•February 5, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Another nizzze extension from Younify for your Magento webshop. This time, an extension which will help Magento bookstore owners increase their conversion. For a customer of ours, fotografie.nl we developed a Magento extension to show the Google Book Previews on the product page.

A little history grabbed from Google’s site:

Around 2002 Google launched the Google Books project. Part of Google Books is that certain books can be viewed online. Currently over 10,000 publishers and authors from 100+ countries are participating in the Book Search Partner Program. The Library Project expands to 28 partners, including seven international library partners: Oxford University (UK), University of Complutense of Madrid (Spain), the National Library of Catalonia (Spain), University Library of Lausanne (Switzerland), Ghent University (Belgium) and Keio University (Japan).

So what does this mean? Well, if a book you sell in your Magento store has been scanned by Google, it will add this button to your Magento product page:

Books are recognized based upon the ISBN number. If a book is not available for Google Preview, the button will not show. The extension allows site visitors to get a preview of the book, thus increasing online sales and visitor satisfaction.

  • The extension costs 19.95€. If you want, we can install it for you for an additional charge of 55€. To order, please send an e-mail to info@younify.nl

    Newsletter Subscription+ for Magento online stores

    •December 31, 2009 • Leave a Comment

    Newsletter Subscription+Younify’s Magento extension ‘Newsletter Subscription+’ allows Magento store owners to provide variable discounts to newsletter subscribers. By offering greater incentives and adding a ‘lottery’ element to the subscription process, store owners will be able to increase the number of newsletter subscribers.

    After installing the module, store owners can determine the minimum, maximum and average discount amount they would like to give away. These admin settings will make sure that, although the discount percentage is randomly generated for each new subscriber, the discounts given will never exceed the store owners’ budget.

    This is how it works:
    • When a new user subscribes to the newsletter a subscription confirmation email is sent to user;
    • The user will have to click the confirmation link in the e-mail. After this subscription has been confirmed another e-mail is sent to the user, containing the randomly generated discount percentage and the coupon code to redeem the discount during the checkout process;
    • After the coupon code has been used, the discount rule will be inactive;
    • The store owner is able to control the minimum, maximum and average discount amount via the Magento admin panel.

    The extension is a great addition for any storeowner who wants to boost the number of newsletter subscribers. The ‘lottery’ element will entice more visitors to subscribe, as they will be looking for the opportunity to benefit from THE special discount.

    An example:
    • Store owner has set the minimum discount amount to 5%
    • Store owner has set the maximum discount amount to 40%
    • Store owner has set the average discount amount to 10%

    Site visitor Joe, subscribes to the newsletter and receives a 20% discount on his first purchase. When the second visitor subscribes, the extension will calculate and see that the discount provided is above the average discount the store owner wants to give away. As a result it will provide an randomly chosen discount between 5% (the minimum) and 10% (the average). As a result the next visitor Jane, can (for example) receive a discount of 7%.

    The price of this extensions is 19.95€. To order or if you have any questions, please contact Younify:

    3D Floorplanner MagentoTo close the year in style we are excited to inform you about our latest extension: The 3D Floorplanner.

    Younify’s 3D Floorplanner extensions connects the Magento Commerce software with online floor planner functionality from floorplanner.com through its API.

    Using floorplanners’ easy interface, site visitors can quickly create and share interactive floor plans. Using various tools, such as point-and-click and drag-and-drop the visitor can put objects from the Magento store, such as a couch, a table or a chair into their own floor plan. Floor plans can be saved for later use, they can be send to friends or colleagues or they can be printed. Check the movie which can be found at the bottom of this page.

    Creating a Google Analytics sales funnel for a Magento webshop

    •November 28, 2009 • 5 Comments

    I specialize in two things: building good-looking Magento webshops and ensuring good conversion rates (sales) for our clients. While trying to identify how to improve webshop conversion, I often use Google analytics to see what’s going on.

    One of the nicest features of Google Analytics is the ‘Goal’ feature. It allows you to set goals (=sale or leads) for your site and track how successful you are. Via the sales funnel you can see quite nicely how you are doing and what you can do to improve your webshop conversion.

    This short article describes how to set-up a ‘Goal’ for your Magento webshop in Google Analytics. It presumes you have already set-up Google analytics on your Magento webshop.

    1) Login to Google analytics and select the site you want to set-up a goal for. Click edit.

    2) On the next screen, click ‘Add Goal’

    Setting-up a Google analytics sales funnel

    3) Give your goal a name (for example ‘Sale’) and configure the screen as follows:

    • Select ‘URL Destination’ as goal type.
    • Select ‘Head Match’ as match type.
    • The Goal URL, is the URL when a sale is completed. For Magento shops this is usually:
    • http://www.yourdomain.com/checkout/onepage/success/
    • In Goal value enter the average order amount you normally have in your shop.
    • Then click:  ‘Yes, create a funnel for this goal’

    4) Now we have to set-up the different steps in getting to the goal ‘Sale’

    • In Step 1 we will add the following URL: http://www.yourdomain.com/index.php and call it ‘Home’ – This is your homepage
    • In Step 2 we will add the following URL: http://www.yourdomain.com/checkout/cart/ and call it ‘Cart’ – This your shopping cart page (yahooo somebody added a product to his shopping cart!)
    • In Step 3 we will add the following URL: http://www.yourdomain.com/checkout/onepage/ and call it ‘Checkout’ – The customers getting to this page actually want to proceed with the order. Only step left is to have them press ‘order now’ :-)

    5) Click ‘Save Goal’.

    Now do this take a piece of paper and write down how many customer you think actually complete your purchase process after they have reached the checkout process…..80%, 40%…10%? Let the statistics run for a couple of days, make sure everything is working as it should and check your sales funnel. It should look something like this:

    What is your percentage and how can you improve it…..that’s the topic of our next post.

    Magento theme: change format of (one) category item

    •November 10, 2009 • Leave a Comment

    Today I learned something interesting from one of our clients (poaa.com). We have developed a multi-shop Magento environment for them. They sell design furniture.

    For their christmas specials they made a new category in their Magento shop. They used simple HTML coding to change the font color of that menu item. This ensures this particular category is receiving more attention than the others.

    Image showing how one category is formatted differently

    How to accomplish this? Well, it is actually very simple, but hey, i didn’t know it, so maybe this helps you too:

    1) Just include the HTML formatting tag, for example <font color=”red”>your category name</font> in the namefield of your category (in the Magento backend);
    2) Saving the category will create an ‘ugly’ URL key for the category (since it will include the HTML code you added). Fix that by entering manually the correct category URL.

    And you are done!
